Jimmy Dowell Shields, 88, of Canton, Texas, went home to the Lord on June 2, 2024. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at Eubank Funeral Home, Bro. Roy James officiating.
Jimmy was born on August 25, 1935, in the Oakland Community of Van Zandt County, Texas, to Robert Dowell Shields and Mary Martha “Mayme” Chambless Shields. He graduated from Grand Saline High School in 1953. After completing a six-year apprenticeship, he worked as a linotype operator and pressman at the Tyler Morning Telegraph, Dallas Morning News, and Grand Saline Sun. He also served as a sergeant in the Texas National Guard and was an active member of Oakland United Methodist Church.
He married Zura Ann White on December 17, 1955. Throughout their sixty-eight years of marriage, Jimmy deeply loved his family, who were the center of his life. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting and school events. He loved traveling, fishing, camping with family and friends, and playing games. He was a hard worker with a keen sense of humor, a quick smile, and a kind word for everyone he met.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Dowell and Mayme Shields; son, Stephen Shields; grandchildren, Nathan Shields and Anne Graves.
Jimmy is survived by his beloved wife, Zura Shields; daughters: Brenda Gipson and husband, Steve, Sandra Shields, Sheryl Graves and husband, Martin; grandchildren: Lyndee Gipson Mosley and husband, Corby, Nikki Gipson Warner and husband, Codi, Sarah Gipson Alberswerth and husband, Chance, Stephanie Shields Anderson and husband, A. J., Ashley Graves, Andrew Graves, Jessie Couch, C, J. Duncan; great-grandchildren: Alissa Fugate, Madi Fugate, Reagan Mosley, Tripp Mosley, Mason Warner, John Warner, Micah Shields, Myles Shields, Malachi Shields, Sylvia Anderson, Nature Bowman, Karma Bowman, Trinity Godwin, Marley Bowman; a host of other family and friends.
Interment will be at Oakland Cemetery near Canton, Texas.
