Claude George Persons, Jr. “slipped the surly bonds of earth” to “touch the face of God” on December 24, 2021 at the age of 70. Known as George, he embodied quiet strength, extreme steadiness and robust patience. George gave his life to Jesus Christ in his early twenties and received the call into ministry. He committed his life to serving the church as a deacon, through teaching Sunday School, and as a member of the Security Team. He was a jack of all trades and a master of some; he enjoyed gardening, fly-fishing, hunting and bee-keeping.
He was born in Macon, Mississippi to Claude and Mabel Persons. He spent his early childhood in Shuqualak, Mississippi before moving to Jackson, Mississippi. He lived there until his mid-twenties when he moved to Texas to attend Criswell College. He remained in Texas for the rest of his life.
Surviving him are his wife of 41 years, Deborah Earley Persons, and daughters and sons-in-law, Hannah and Josh Braswell of Birmingham, Alabama, Lauren and Brian Smith of Terrell, Texas, and daughter, Ruth Persons of Greer, South Carolina. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Beau Smith, Dax Smith, Landon Gregory, Allie Gregory, Gray Smith, Aiden and Emma Braswell.
George’s family received the blessing of 16 additional years of life with him due to a liver transplant. To honor his memory, they ask that you consider becoming an organ donor.
A memorial service will be held 2 pm Wednesday, December 29, 2021, at Lakeside Baptist Church in Canton with Bro. Dennis Erwin and Dr. Mark Moore officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Lakeside Baptist Church in Canton, Texas or Donate Life at donatelife.net.
