He was born January 11, 1926 in Norristown, Pennsylvania to the late Edwin and Harriet (Clarke) Mewhinney. He grew up and attended school in North Bergen, New Jersey until his senior year when the family moved to Akron, Ohio where he graduated from East High School in 1943. Upon graduation he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War. After serving in the Navy he attended the University of Akron, was a member of the Lone Star Fraternity, and received a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration. Upon graduation he was employed at the East Ohio Gas Company, Akron Division, as Office Manager. During his employment he served on the Board of Akron Volunteer Service Bureau, Child Guidance Center, Akron Community Service, and was a High School Recruiter for Junior Achievement. After 34 years of service with the East Ohio Gas Company, he retired as the Akron Division Commercial and Personnel Manager. His many activities included past president of the Akron Kiwanis Club, past president of the Akron Canton chapter of the Administrative Management Society, 41 year member of the North Canton Elks and 60 year member of Akron Coventry Masonic Lodge. He was also a member of the "Run with Gregg," marathon runners sponsored by his late son's friends, that he attended yearly. For the past thirty years he resided in Sun City Center, Florida during the winter and served as Secretary of the Sun City Center King's Point Knolls II Condo Association. Over the course of his retirement, he enjoyed many cruises, traveling the U.S., and most importantly spending time with family.
Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Mitzi, and his son, Gregg Mewhinney.
He is survived by three daughters: Joyce (Michael) Eaker, M.D., Nancy Dunderman, and Carolyn (Ronald) Pastoria; two step-daughters, Patti (Bobby) Hallisey and Rosemary Flanagan; two step-sons, Jim Stanceu and the Honorable Tim (Mary) Stanceu; four grandchildren: Todd, Stacey, and Sean Dunderman, Victoria Horner; six step-grandchildren: Christy Hallisey, Lindsay and Adam Stanceu, and Josh, John, and Jesse Pastoria; and two great-grandchildren, Blake and Logan Dunderman.
A private funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 11, 2021 at Karlo-Libby Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Smith officiating. Due of the Covid-19 Pandemic, only immediate family will be in attendance. The service will be live streamed on Sunset Hills Burial Park Facebook page. Dick will later be laid to rest next to his wife, Mitzi, at North Lawn Cemetery.
Memorial contributions can be made in Dick’s name to the donor’s charity of choice.
