Richard Lee Gilliland passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 15th, after a long battle with dementia. He was preceded in death by his parents Harland Pirl and Mabel Gilliland and his beloved rabbit Jellybean. Richard is survived by his devoted partner Carolyn Gilliland, his son Martin Gilliland, daughter Christine Wolf; siblings Linda Dennis, Edward Gilliland and Bill Gilliland. Born on April 2nd, 1944 in Akron, Ohio; Richard graduated from Ravenna High School. He served in the National Guard for four years and attended The University of Akron. Over his career he worked as a draftsman for General Tire, drove a truck for Norandex, and most recently was an accomplished sales representative for Avalon Foods. His passions included golfing, sailing, history, antique cars, and eating ice cream….lots and lots of ice cream. He was an expert handyman and a navigational genius who always dressed with impeccable style. His charm and sense of humor were infectious and he smiled until his last day on earth. He passed his strong work ethic and independent spirit on to his children, who will miss him terribly. A private memorial service will be held in October for close family and friends.
