He began a 43-year newspaper career at The Repository and concluded it in 1989 as news consultant for Thomson Newspapers. He also was on the news staff of the Akron Beacon Journal and was editor-general manager of The Marion (OH) Star. One of his journalism career highlights was serving as the photographer for a month-long trip around the world with the Associated Press.
Wherever his career took him he was active in church and community affairs. He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church, North Canton Elks, Stark Business and Professional Men’s Club, a former Rotarian and active nationally in the YMCA. In his newspaper work he received three national and eight Ohio awards for efforts on behalf of traffic safety.
He had a second career in income tax preparation with 18 years locally at H&R Block, and eight years with AARP Tax-Aide.
Family was important to Paul, and he was always happy to go on family vacations or whenever and wherever family members gathered. Euchre would be played, sports watched and lots of good food consumed. He also enjoyed the annual Herman Family Reunion, which he attended from its inception until his death. He loved playing golf and had numerous memorable golf trips. Paul was an avid Bridge player and played regularly up until one month before his death.
Born in Wooster on February 7, 1924, to the late Ralph W. and Ruth Herman Miller. He graduated from Akron Central High School and Ohio University, and was a loyal Bobcat fan all his life. Last year, at the age of 100, he spoke at the 100-year anniversary of the Scripps School of Journalism. In college, he was a member of Phi Kappa Tau, Omicron Delta Kappa and Sigma Delta Chi.
In 2003, Paul was preceded in death by his first wife of 50 years, Martha J (Baker), and in 2023 by his second wife of 18 years, Mary Ellen (Hoffhines). He was also preceded in death by his sister Betty Andonian. He leaves three sons, Mark of Toledo, OH, Dave (Kathleen) of Delaware, OH, Jeffrey (Donna) of Spring Hill, TN; seven grandchildren, Jay Miller, Sarah (Blake) Warner, Adam (Samantha Quinn) Miller, Leslie (Ryan) McChesney, Amanda (Tim) Robinson, Anne (Sean) Flanery and Morgan Miller, and eleven great grandchildren and three step-great grandchildren.
He is also survived by a step-daughter, Laurel (Hoover) of Cleveland; a step-son, Richard Riehm (Carmen) of Gold Canyon, AZ, five step-grandchildren and two step-great grandchildren.
Services will be held at Faith United Methodist Church on April 12th. Calling hours will be from 10 am to 11 am, with a service starting at 11 am. Burial will be in the church’s columbarium. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Faith United Methodist Church scholarship or endowment funds.
