John was born May 24, 1918 in Canton to the late Raymond and Marie (Westrich) Marshall. He graduated in 1936 from McKinley High School, where he played trumpet in the marching band. During WWII, he served his country for five years in the National Guard and the Army in the 135th Field Artillery Band where he played trumpet. During the war he was stationed in Ft. Leonardwood, Missouri; Shelby, Mississippi; and Camp San Luis Obispo, California, before being sent overseas to Germany and the Czech Republic.
He married Anna Mae Gussett on Dec. 4, 1944. They resided in Canton and North Canton where they were members of Christ Community Methodist Church, the North Canton Elks, and Meadow Lake Golf Club. John was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Canton. John retired from Republic Steel (LTV) Berger Division in 1980 after 40 years of service as an Industrial Engineer.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Mae in 2005; and his sister, Betty Drewis-Tracy. He is survived by his daughters, Diana “Delaine” (Lee) Falberg of Thousand Oaks, CA and Carol (Bill) Smythe of La Quinta, CA. John volunteered at Greenmeadows Wellness Center in Alliance, OH from 2005-2007. He moved to La Quinta, CA in 2008 to be near his daughters, who would like to thank God for five extra special years with their dad. John will be remembered for his love and dedication to his family, his country and his church. He loved fishing and spent many summer vacations at Rice Lake, Ontario, Canada. John also loved to play golf. Both John and Anna Mae made great friends through Meadow Lake Golf Club as well as their “card” club. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, with a wonderful sense of humor. In his final months and days, he never complained nor asked for anything, and if you asked how he was feeling, he would always say “fair.”
