John William Chaney, age 75, of Canton, Ohio, passed away on June 13, 2024, at Mercy Medical in Canton, Ohio. Born on April 29, 1949, in Steubenville, Ohio, to the late John V. Chaney and Alice Chaney, John was part of a proud family tradition, being one of many John Chaneys passed down through generations. He lived a life full of love, laughter, and dedication to his family and friends.
John was a proud Vietnam Veteran, having served in the US Navy from 1967 to 1971. After his military service, he worked as a truck driver for Heartland Express, retiring in 2018. John was known for his love of night-time cat fishing, spending countless hours by the water with a cold Strohs beer in hand. His passion for Dodge, Chrysler, and Plymouth cars was unmatched, and he often exclaimed, "Mopar or No Car!" John was also a diehard fan of the Cleveland Browns and Cleveland Guardians, consistently cheering them on with unyielding support.
John was a man of many interests. He enjoyed working with tools, watching horror movies, and taking care of his family, which he did with great devotion. His sense of humor and ability to make others laugh with his outrageous comments will be dearly missed. John had a knack for making people smile with his orneriness. He was always ready with a sarcastic compliment or commentary about his own good looks. His stubbornness was legendary; he lived life on his own terms, never caring what others thought but always ready to lend a helping hand.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John V. Chaney and Alice Chaney; his mother-in-law, Sandi Forrer; brother-in-law, Gene Begley; and nephews, Chris Begley and John Dylan Chaney. He is survived by his beloved wife of 31 years, Kelly Chaney, whom he met 38 years ago; his daughters, Amanda (Quay) Tran and Vicki (Justin Isley) Chaney; his granddaughters, Abby Dukowitz, Elizabeth Dukowitz, Destiny Dukowitz, and Jasmine Isley; his siblings, Darlene (Marlon) Best, and Cheryl (John) Mayle, Barb Begley, Darrell Chaney; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, David and Diana Forrer; and numerous nieces and nephews.
John Chaney was a remarkable man, known for his strength, good heart, and fierce love for his family. He will be remembered for his dedication to his loved ones, his infectious laughter, and his larger-than-life personality. John touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Karlo-Libby Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 26th. The commemoration of John's life will follow at 12:00 PM. Immediately after, there will be a procession to Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, 10175 Rawiga Road, Rittman, OH 44270, for his military honors.
