Sam was born in Canton on September 3, 1949 to the late William H. and Mary (Dreher) Hawthorne. Sam graduated from Canton South High School in 1969 and then he married Shirley Truex that October. They celebrated 53 years of marriage together before she passed in September of 2023. For the majority of his life worked in the auto industry at Jim Edwards Ford and Ganley Ford. Sam was a lifelong Cleveland Browns fan and he was also a fan of NASCAR. He also loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Along with his parents and wife, Sam is preceded in death by six siblings: Lenny Hawthorne, Denise Hatfield, Dennis Hawthorne, Linda Budd, Danny Hawthorne, and Roseann Mitchell.
Sam is survived by his children, Brian (Kim) Hawthorne and Kelly (Tim) May; four grandchildren: Cody Hawthorne, Dale Hawthorne, Alie Hawthorne and Luke May; brother, Pat Hawthorne, and many nieces and nephews.
Per Sam's wishes, he will be cremated and laid to rest next to his wife at Sunset Hills Memory Gardens.
