Donald Carson Slates, 97, passed away June 19, 2017 in Aultman Hospital after a short illness. He was born in Belmont County, Ohio on January 8, 1920 to the late Zachariah and Della Mae (Carson) Slates.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Anna (Hackathorn) Slates , to whom he was married for 66 years. Also preceded in death by his granddaughter, Alexandra Slates; sisters, Mary Jane (& Bob ) Pinkerton, Dorothy (& Harold) Gotschall, infant Martha Lucille Slates; brother Fred Slates; and brother-in-law Harry Simmons. Survived by daughters, Barbara (Larry) Wilhelm, Sandra (Ken) Rohr; sons, Donald (Sara) Slates, Randal (Sue) Slates; grandchildren, Chad and Jamie Rohr, Nicole (Mike) Metzger, Angela and Zachary Slates, Tatum Slates, Samantha (Scott) Ayers, step-granddaughter, Julie (Ron) Schmucker; great-grandchildren, Sydney Rohr, Jaguer Rohr, Tristan Niehaus, Harper, Finley, and Lennon Ayers; and a sister, Blanche Simmons.
He graduated from Carrollton High School in 1939. He was employed by the Timken Company for 39 years and 8 months. He was one of the original Volunteer Firemen from Richville, serving as treasurer a few years. He used to golf and bowled in several leagues when he was younger. He loved gardening, canning, cooking, and baking. Everyone loved his apple pies.
There will be no calling hours, a private service will be at Karlo-Libby Funeral Home.
