Sherm,
It is almost the end of March, and it seems impossible that you are no longer on this earth.  You are in our hearts and minds, but we cannot touch you or see you, except of course in our minds.  Sometimes Greg & I run to a room to talk to you or call your name, forgetting you won't answer.  We love you.  We love our nephews & for Greg his cousins Stephen & David in the same way.  Our world is filled with their presence and yours in a different way, but always you are there & loved & missed.

This news saddened me, and, actually, surprised me:  I always thought of Sherm as indestructible and ongoing.  Of the generation of bandleaders of which he was a part (and I suspect anyone reading this could fill in most, if not all, of the other names), Sherman was the most professional and resolutely honest of them all.  I gained an enormous education working for all the members of that generation of leaders and contractors, but what I learned from Sherman Marcus about what (and what not) to do in leading a band at a social event remains unsurpassed.  One memory, among dozens:  In 1986, I played an afternoon gig at the Pine Brook C.C. in Weston with him, the day after my own wedding, and he announced my marriage to the crowd and got me a round of congratulatory applause.  (Who but Sherm...)
Condolences to his family (none of whom I've ever actually had the privilege of meeting, alas), and, having read part of his daughter's blog about taking care of him in his final days, it's obvious that the apple never falls far from the tree.

This is from Janet, Sherm's wife of  45 1/2 years.  Cannot believe so much time went by, yet it could never have been enough.  Thanks to everyone who has called, sent cards, thought of us, contributes to this Guest Book or was able to attend Sherm's funeral service.  Sherm was a good good person who was the best friend anyone could have.  Glad my son Greg & daughter Greta take after him in that way.  Sherm never regretted helping someone out, & he did help whenever he could or felt he needed to. He was one of a kind (in the best sense), & I am so pleased that he was appreciated by so many other people.  He kept his friends for a lifetime.  That is a real tribute to not only the man but the kind of friends he had. You are always with us Sherm in our hearts.  Your dear friends Harold, Ernie  & nephews David & Stephen & others are with you. When I said a couple of days ago to my sister-in-law Kathy that she & my brother Stephen did not have to attend the funeral after just losing in December the 2nd of their twin sons, she replied, "It was Sherm." My 93 y.o.Dad Carl keeps asking, "Where's Sherm?"  I Keep telling him Sherm doesn't like the cold.  Sherm loved him too & always visited the VA to see him, & I think for the parties.  Thank you Sherm for being you. The kitties miss you.

This is from son Greg. For those of you reading and posting for Sherm or for those who came to his funeral. I cant quite thank you enough. You've make an unbearable task so comforting. From a memory a dear friend of Sherm's gave him a ride home, then looked over and said I'm Sherm's son. I replied, I thought so. If he liked you you were family. Thank you and love you Dad!

Dear Marcus Family, my father is Jordan Shapiro, he's a drummer who worked with Sherman and has known him for many years. He is now in Florida for the winter and asked that I send his condolences. He was extremely saddened to hear of Sherman's death. He says Sherman was a very very very nice man and the most honest man he had ever met.  He wanted to share the following memory: After my grandfather (Joe Shapiro) passed away (about 50 years ago),  Sherman wanted to purchase his piano tuning equipment.  My father had done some research as to their value but was unsure.  Sherman offered some very high amount to which my father tried to lower to something closer to the ballpark value.  Sherman said that price was too low for even regular tools, but these were very specialized instruments and he again insisted on reverse negotiating the price up.  Eventually my father reluctantly agreed to his "overly generous" offer.

So sorry to hear the news!  My dad, Ernie Gaudreau and Shermie go way back to the Bernard office days... Sherm and Dad last saw each other in the nursing home where Dad spent his final days.  They were so glad to see each other .  (thanks to Greg for bringing Sherm all the way to Newburyport !)  We have a wonderful photo of them visiting.  Dad passed two months later having had the company of his dear lifetime friend.  Sherm will be in our hearts always .

You performed at my Bar-Mitzvah in March of 1969,what a time we all had. My condolences to the family.

So sad to hear of Sherm's passing. He and my father worked together for many years, and I can see him now, in his tuxedo, smiling, playing, and really enjoying himself as I'm sure he knew how lucky he was to be doing something he loved. He was a wonderful, generous man to be around...my condolences to his family.

Mr. Sherman was a true joy to be around.  He touched everyone's heart that he came in contact with.  Thoughts and prayers for the family in the days to come, and thanks for sharing Mr. Sherman with us.  Greta, and her family, did an AWESOME job making sure that Mr. Sherman was surrounded with love, got the best of care, never complained, never tired, and maintained the respect that Mr. Sherman deserved.  I am blessed to have the memories that I have, and I am sure that everyone else is, as well!

I worked for him as the "Rock Guitar Singer Guy" for all of the 80's and more. He was a joy to work for and I learned a lot about the business from him from how to run a wedding to learning tons of Jewish music that has come in handy many times since then. I wish his family all my love as they go through their loss and Greta's blog was inspiring to read. Here it is for those interested...

Our hearts goes out to you at this time and in the days ahead. May you continue to feel comforted by the love and support of family and friends. He was a very special man, I remember many times hanging out with him in your back room listening to his take on life, I learned a lot from such a great man.

Uncle Sherm will always be fondly remembered and we will smile each time we think of him. Never afraid to tell you how much he loved you or to share his true feelings, Uncle Sherm inspired all who knew him. The music of his heart and the light of his soul will shine on...

I remember Sherm so fondly; he was a smart businessman with a wry sense of humor and he loved his family so very much. We did a lot of laughing and managed to make some music inbetween. I was lucky to have known him.
