Sarah was born on October 7th, 1950, in Winthrop, by the sea. The first child of Sam and Sylvia, she enjoyed a wonderful childhood in Winthrop and N.Y. where she thrived in school for many years – a cheerleader in high school, head of her class and a social butterfly! She attended Skidmore College, Harvard Graduate School and was medically discharged only a semester before graduating Pratt Institute in Greenwich Village as an architect.
Cleaning out her apartment I found magnificent clarity not only in architectural and building plans but in her paintings and the imaginative, whimsical design work done in graphic design for galleries in N.Y. and organizations in Massachusetts. A life member of Hadassah, she did their bulletins and produced a cookbook for them. Her work as a visual artist in paintings and drawings went from birds, flowers and landscapes to portraits and self-portraits showing the amazing span of her artistic talent. Medically discharged a semester from graduating as an architect at Pratt, diagnosed with bi-polar illness, her journey through doctors that didn’t understand, medications and unfortunate circumstances began. However, her brilliance shone through in poetry, art and a will that loved peace and truth – a true Libran like her father. I found correspondence that she had with cousin Joel, (may his memory be for a blessing) about her medicines as he helped research possibilities like he did with Barbara's illness. But after years and years Sarah no longer wanted medical interventions.
For over 30 years she worked at our flower store, delivering flowers and bringing joy and lightheartedness to all of us. Sarah was an elegant, humble human being who never said a bad word about anyone and just did not get involved in the compromises that most people live in everyday life. Sarah rolled on a fast track - a neighbor of Bob Dylan, a lover of rock and roll and a veteran of Woodstock, she was not derailed by a husband or children. Fiercely independent, she lived her life on her own terms. It has been a magnificent journey being her only sibling and having the privilege of caring for her all these years. If it wasn’t for Sarah my life would never have had the meaning it has had - through marriage, family, work and deep faith. I hope and pray that she will be a good intercedent on behalf of our family and all of Israel as she continues her journey through eternity.
