Monica Roizner Hesped(Eulogy)
Part 1

Monica was a one-of-a-kind listener. When I was in her presence, I felt like she had all the time in the world and that I was her world. 


How fitting that the first word of the Parsha this week is Vayishma, and Yitro listened. The rabbis wonder what exactly was it that Yitro was listening to that prompted him to join the Jewish people more formally. The obvious answer they offer is that he heard about the majestic miracles of the splitting of the sea and wanted to be part of that. There is an alternative answer that is counterintuitive: Yitro heard about the war that the Jewish people waged against Amalek and that inspired him to join the people. Wouldn’t the presence of combat, violence and war push the average person away? Indeed, but Yitro was not the typical person! When he heard someone else’s struggles that brought him closer to that person. He had the gift to listen to pain in a way that transformed it into beauty. 


That was Monica’s superpower. Both professionally and personally, she used her gift of listening to elevate our frustrations and disappointments. She cared and was able to shift our sense of longing for something into a sense of belonging. 


I am reminded of a passage from Amos Oz’s Autobiography in which he describes his grandfather’s capacity to listen. This could have been written about Monica as well: 

“What was the secret of Grandpa's charm?  I began to understand only years later.  He possessed a quality that is hardly ever found among men, a marvelous quality that for many women is the sexiest in a man: He listened.  He did not just politely pretend to listen, while impatiently waiting for her to finish what she was saying and shut up. He did not break into his partner's sentence and finish it for her. He did not cut in to sum up what she was saying so as to move on to another subject.
