Loving husband of Anita (Mermelstein) Gelfand of 63 years. Loving son of the late Katherine (Goldberg) and Samuel Gelfand. Beloved father of Jerold Gelfand and his wife Jennifer Nichols of Lex-ington, Richard Gelfand and his wife Susan Glueck of Ashland and Scott Gelfand of Brooklyn, NY. Cherished grandfather of Carolyn, Nathan and Parker Gelfand. Brother of the late Raymond Gelfand and his late wife, Thelma, of Baltimore MD. Loving Uncle to Janice Weinstein, Nancy Kapp and Stacy Goren and Great Uncle to Dara Weinstein, Todd Weinstein, Tyler Kapp, Brooke Goren and Kevin Goren.
Fred was born in Baltimore, MD on September 21, 1932. By high school, he was an accomplished pianist and was accepted into the Peabody Preparatory School on a scholarship, where he provided piano accompaniment to many voice students in the program.
He began his career as an office assistant in the advertising department of The Hecht Company, department store. He attended the University of Baltimore at night, majoring in business and graduated with honors in the school of Marketing. He then went on to work as a layout artist and later an advertising director for the Hecht Company and Hamburger’s men’s store.
After moving to Massachusetts in 1973, he began working as an Advertising Director for Kennedy’s. For several years he commuted to New York City as VP of Advertising and Sales Promotion for Bond Clothing Store and Kings Department Store.
He later returned to Massachusetts as VP of Marketing and Advertising for Lechmere. He ended his career as Executive VP of Advertising for Bradlees Department Store.
Fred designed the monthly bulletin for Temple Beth Am in Framingham and was active in a local barbershop singing group.
During his retirement years, he became a prolific oil painter and he exhibited his work at various venues throughout Metrowest. His paintings were inspired by places he visited, including France, Italy, Israel, and Greece as well as various places in New England. When Fred and Anita moved to Orchard Cove in 2018, he continued to display his paintings there.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Chapel Service on Tuesday, December 20, 2022 at 1 PM at Stanetsky Memorial Chapel, 475 Washington Street, Canton, MA. Chapel Service will be livestreamed at https://tinyurl.com/Frederick-Gelfand.
Burial will follow at Sharon Memorial Park, 40 Dedham Street, Sharon, MA.
Following the burial, Shiva will take place from 3-6:00 PM at Orchard Cove, 1 Del Pond Drive, Canton, MA. Enter from the main entrance.
