It had been a year since Zhenya's passing, so premature and so tragic. He left next day after our last weekly work meeting. Since then, there has not been a single meeting where we have not recalled what Zhenya said on this or that topic, what he taught us, what he insisted on, what he warned us against.
With Zhenya's passing we lost a lot, almost everything. But we are trying to recover and continue the work of the team he built in the direction that, in our opinion, would have been right for him.

Zheka, I can’t believe that we will not share any more crazy and beautiful adventures, beach and wood cabins, delicious food and wine, arguments  about books and films together with you. I am so grateful that we had them. Your kids and your grandkids all have your spirit, and I hope they will stay friends with our kids and grandkids. Miss you terribly.

Eugene was one of the kindest, smartest, sweetest people I know. I love how he was always helping anytime someone needed it. I love that he was smart enough to teach my son, Cameron, physics and fun enough to make it an enjoyable experience that Cam looked forward to and found really interesting.  I love how he made every get-together better just by being there with his warm presence. And I love how much I could just feel his love for his family in everything he did.  We all loved him and he will be so greatly missed. Our family sends our love and deep condolences  ♥️ Wonderful Eugene will always be in our hearts ♥️

We have been lucky to witness many special moments with Eugene through our friendship with Varvara  - his bubbling joy at Varvara’s wedding, a serene family dinner on the beach near Boston, a magical day sailing in Catalina, and beautiful meals at their home in Los Angeles. He always made us feel like part of the family because there was always more than enough love to go around. I loved to watch Eugene cause mischief and then take the playful admonishment from his family. Peter really enjoyed trying to understand Eugene’s very strong opinions about math and sharing the love of blinis and herring for brunch.  My favorite memory though, and how I will remember him, is running around the zoo, absolutely beaming, with Leo perched on his shoulders shouting out instructions. If that kind of moment isn’t the goal in life, I’m not sure what is. His lively spirit will be  very greatly missed, but I have no doubt that it is strong enough to continue to ensure his family is wrapped in laughter and love. I know we’ll still feel your presence when we get lucky enough to sneak our way into family gatherings, but we’ll miss you very much Eugene.

Dear loved ones of Eugene! Please accept my sincere condolences.

I worked with Eugene and was his student, wrote my master's thesis with him. Eugene was an incredibly kind and sympathetic person, an amazing mentor who believed in me, lit a fire in me and led me to the very end, always supporting and motivating. But at the same time he was strict and demanding, teaching me one important rule: if you take on a job, do it as well as possible. 
Personally, I saw him only once in St. Petersburg and I will remember him for the rest of my life ... I will remember him as a funny, smart, wise and cheerful person.

I remember that when I first met Eugene and started working with him, he asked me: Should I write more strict or softer comments on the quality of your code? And I answered that as strict as possible, because I came to you to learn and I will always strive for the perfect. I always liked his strict but at the same time humor-filled comments very much and I will miss them... Now that Eugene has passed away, I will always remember this and try not to let him down.

Dear Anna, Barbara, Lida, Mitja, Peter, Goar and others!

Let me express my condolence to you. Eugene's death is so unexpected and so terrible for all who know and love him, including us at Tor. We worked with him for many years. Literally, Eugene not only created a great software, he also creates us, and the work team.

I realized that every day I mentally talk to Eugene , ask him for a help, remember his bright notes and jokes. It is very difficult to live without Eugene in every way.
Please know that we in St. Petersburg are with you in that day. I am sure that Eugene is watching us, so we try not to disappoint him.

All thoughts are about Genya today. I will always cherish the time we spent with him and his amazing family: in Los Angeles, in Boston, in Italy, in St. Petersburg... He was always so helpful, optimistic,  energetic, and full of ideas.  The last time we met was at the 239 reunion. It is hard to believe it was the last time...

This is so sad we shall not see Zhenia again. I will remember his energy, his love to the family, his love of life.
 Let peace and comfort surround this family, and guide them at this difficult times.

My family is so sad to hear of Eugene's passing. He was such a kind person and wonderfully gifted teacher. He was a blessing to our community.

Zhenya was my oldest friend. We met on the first day of the first class in our school in St Petersburg and were very close until i left in the beginning of the 8th grade. We studied art history at the Hermitage together, were on the math team together ,and spend a lot of time together in our small friend group of 4 and later 3 kids playing and talking. Zhenia was a wonderful friend - fun, kind, deep and thoughtful. We gradually lost touch after I left, but reconnected in the US over 10 years ago and stayed in touch ever since. We both had big families and worked a lot, so I always assumed we would spend a lot more time together after we retire. I will miss him very much and will always regret not spending more time with him when I could. I have been remembering our childhood together and how much he meant to me all week. His memory is a blessing.

I remember you as a young curious boy when you came to Moscow and stayed with us. You wondered around Citi on your own so independently, exactly knowing what you wanted to see. And then you had dinner with us and once went with us to visit our friends.

It always moved me that he would walk up to Peter and give him a kiss on the head or something.  A father who is affectionate with his teenage boy is a very good man.
