Dora was born in Pittsburg, Kansas to German Immigrants, Johann and Auguste Jacobs. She was the second youngest of ten. Preceding her in death, were siblings: Anna, Johnny, Minna, Pauline, Emma, Bernhardt, Christine, Walter and Neils.
She was 10 years old when her beloved Carl (known as Ray to family) then 12 years old, would wink at her from across the room of the one room school house. This would happen every time she looked back at him. That was the beginning of their love story.
In 1941, Dora and her best friend, Nina Jacobs followed Carl and her two brothers, Walt and Ben to California. Dora and Nina lived and worked with Nina’s friend who owned a bakery in North Hollywood. Dora and Carl married March 1, 1941 at Wee Kirk of the Heather chapel at Forest Lawn, Glendale. Two weeks later Dora’s brother, Walt, married Nina at the same chapel.
During World War II Dora followed Carl, who served as a Sergeant in the Army Air Corp. They traveled to various bases such as San Antonio, Texas. Fresno, California and Macon, Georgia. Dora was able to do this thanks to the Civil Service Jobs given her.
After the war ended Dora and Carl took a 6 week scenic cross-country vacation across the states back to California. Carl settled back in at Lockheed Aircraft and Dora worked at Pacific Aircraft for the next few years. Dora and Carl bought an acre of land way out in the country, “Girard”, which changed names to “Walnut Acres”, and is now named Woodland Hills. They built their home on that property and raised their two children, Laura and Carl there. Both Dora and Carl loved to garden and had many fruit trees and berries on their property. Dora loved to can fruit and make jam. She loved to bake pies and her pie crust was “simply out of this world the best!”.
While Carl was working his way through 35 years at Lockheed aircraft, Dora was a full time mother and helped at Canoga Park Lutheran School and Church. She helped serve hot lunches, volunteered at the school library and helped at a host of church functions. She spent over 30 years of service making Braille books for the blind. Carl served the church as well in various capacities as Elder, Sunday School Teacher and Church council, Trustees etc.
Dora and Carl enjoyed their friends and played pinochle for 50+ years with the same group of people, all originating from Canoga Park Lutheran Church. Carl took retirement from Lockheed in 1974 and both he and Dora got their Real Estate license and enjoyed being agents for 25 years. Carl and Dora were celebrated 69 years of marriage when Carl went to be with the Lord on March 17, 2010. Dora was a strong woman of faith in her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and both she and Carl raised their two children, Laura and Carl in the Christian faith as well.
Many family vacations were spent together camping, fishing and hiking in the Mammoth Lakes and June Lake area. Carl and Dora loved being with the family, more than anything else. We had many fun dinners and holiday celebrations together. They took such joy in their children and grandchildren (Amber, Jacob, Daniel, Ashley, Jeremy and Justin). Dora became a Great grandmother in 2014 with the birth of Ciara, daughter of Amber and Grant Dunnagan.
