Alan was born in Campbellton on December 12, 1947 to the late Joyce (Irvine) and the late Daniel Cook.
He grew up in Campbellton with 4 brothers and 1 sister with whom he has always maintained a close bond throughout his lifetime. At a young age, he developed a passion for the sport of hockey, which led to an induction into the Campbellton Sports Hall of Fame as a member of the Campbellton Juvenile Cubs. He also had a deep love of horses which he nurtured with many hours of grooming and walking horses at the Campbellton Race track, and horseback riding in Tide Head with friends.
After working in Ontario for a number of years, he returned to Campbellton as manager of Atlantic Wholesalers, and eventually as manager of the Campbellton Lions Club Bowling Center. He was a charter member of the Campbellton Lions Club where he especially enjoyed working with the blind in the early days of the club. He was also a faithful member of the Campbellton First Baptist Church and spent many Sunday mornings welcoming the congregation to the service.
Alan was a man known for fierce honesty and loyalty, a man who was not afraid to defend the ones he loved and would speak up when something needed to be said. His generosity and his ability to put others’ needs ahead of his own were felt by a long list of people. He will be remembered for his skill of storytelling, and his very sharp, humorous wit. Anyone who knew Alan can recount many occasions in which he’s left them with a smile on their faces.
After retiring, he was able to spend several winters in Florida and enjoyed the life of traveling with Gwen in their motorhome. Alan also had an unrivaled love for the river. Once the builder and owner of a camp on the Kedgwick River, he would eventually carve out a parcel of land in Flatlands on the Restigouche River. Alan’s vision for this land eventually turned into his own heaven on earth and he spent as many of his days on the property as he could over the past several years. He loved to watch the sunrise early in the morning and enjoyed many mornings with his coffee friends at Chez Wes.
Above all, Alan devoted his life and energy to his family; to providing for them in every way that he could. His love for his wife, his three sons, his 5 grandchildren and his daughters in law was evident every single day, whether near or far. He will be missed and it is hard to think about him not being here with us, yet comforting to know he is watching over us from up above.
Besides his wife, Gwen, he is survived by his 3 sons, Trevor (Jennifer) of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Tyson (Mepla) of Ottawa, Ontario and Nathan (Kristen) of Boston, Massachusetts. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren - Benjamin, Charlie, Alexa, Colin, and Laila and 4 siblings - Wayne, Gordie, Bonnie and Guy. Other than his parents, he is predeceased by his oldest brother Danny.
