Stan’s parents, Paul and Lydia Palmer, moved from Oregon to Campbell River in 1932 and bought property that extended from the waterfront to what is now Maryland Estates. The youngest of five children, Stan was born on December 13, 1934, in their family home. The historic Palmer house still stands on land the family settled so many years ago and Stan never moved more than a kilometre away. Stan was a great storyteller and, as an old man of the sea, he loved to share tales of his family’s past and the history of Campbell River.
Campbell River is also where Stan met his wife of 52 years, Iona Pearl Cochran. Together they raised four children and their legacy was their whole-hearted love of family. Over the years, Stan and Pearl developed a passion for golf, gardening and travel. When Pearl passed away in 2011, Stan took solace in their garden, long walks at Elk Falls Park, and time with family and friends. As a legendary figure in the fishing industry, Stan started his career with Tulloch Western and was well-known as manager of the Canadian Fishing Company and owner of Seaway Marine Services. Stan’s love of commercial and sport fishing often brought his friends and family together.
Stan was predeceased by his wife, Pearl; his parents, Paul and Lydia; his siblings, Roy, Earl, Edna Milner, and Ruth Pidcock; and his son-in-law Don Dobson. He will be deeply missed by his children: Terry Dobson, Rod Palmer (Amy), Greg Palmer (Tina), and Kathy McKay. He will also be fondly remembered by his grandchildren, Justin Dobson (Angie), Marisa Ryan (Darren), Emily Locke (Andrew), Zachary Palmer, Marie Concepcion, Rachel Bettenson (Dan), Jillian Rauser, David Palmer, Caeli McKay
Riendeau (Vince), Brynn McKay, and Broedy McKay; his 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and close friends.
Stan’s family is incredibly grateful for the kindness and support he received from so many relatives, friends, neighbours, and health professionals. We would especially like to extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. Valmiki Veerapen for going above and beyond in helping Stan live such a long and healthy life.
At Stan’s request, there will be no funeral. He was a proud member of the Campbell River Shrine Club and made friends with fellow Shriners all over the world. Donations can be made to this charity that was so close to his heart, https://www.shrinerschildrens.org/en/locations/ca. In lieu of flowers, please plant
something special in your garden in memory of Stan.
