Loving wife to Larry for 61 years, loving mother to Vicki, Lynne (Dave) and Darren (Paul). Loving grandmother to Megan (Jayce), Robyn (Kevin), Cole (Ina), Clayton and Sydney and loving great grandmother to Lucas, Levi and Charlie.
Joan was born at Nut Mountain, Saskatchewan in 1940 to Roy and Mary Wood and moved, with her family, to the Cowichan Valley in 1954. In 1961, she met and married her husband, Larry, the love of her life and soul mate. They resided in Crofton, BC where they welcomed their daughters Vicki and Lynne. In 1966, Larry and Joan moved to Gold River where, in 1970, their son, Darren, was born. Joan was a caring community member, always willing to lend a hand for family, friends and those in need. If you needed something done, you put Joan on it as she was an unstoppable “doer”.
Joan and Larry spent many weekends with family and friends on their boat in Nootka Sound. They would later build a cabin on Nootka Island where Joan loved to spend her time coaxing her garden to grow and spending time, in the driver’s seat, fishing with Larry. She had many fond memories of time spent with family and friends at Nootka.
Joan was a dedicated mother and avid homemaker but still found time to be a contributing member of the Gold River community. She was an active member of St Peter and St Paul’s Ecumenical Church, the Gold River Health Care Auxiliary, as well as, other community organizations. She loved arts and crafts and excelled at sewing, crochet, knitting, and painting to name a few. Joan was recognized for her weaving skills at the PNE’s Creative Craft Exhibition in 1983.
Joan and Larry retired to Campbell River in 1998 where she became an active member of the Anglican Church and continued supporting Larry in his activities with the Campbell River Curling Club.
Joan passed away peacefully with her family by her side and with the support and care of the Discovery Harbour Care Centre team. There will be no service held at Joan’s request. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice.
