He was born August 26, 1937 in Sommers Point, NJ, son of the late Rose Gertrude (Betz) Worthington Thackeray.
He served as a medic in the United States Air Force for 20 years and worked with DUSTOFF US Army Aeromedical Evacuation during his time in Vietnam. After his retirement from the USAF, he had a variety of careers including working for the Navy Exchange System in California, Pennsylvania, and Hawaii. He also served as a Children and Youth Social Worker with Adams County. For many years he organized both DUSTOFF Association and 38th Bomb Wing (Laon, France) reunions in support of other Veterans like himself.
Roy valued education and earned both a Bachelors Degree from Golden Gate University and a Masters Degree from National University. He provided support for charities aiding Catholic missionaries, Veterans, foster children, and adoption. He was a long time member of the Knights of Columbus.
Roy was preceded in death by his wife, Joan M. (Schramm) Worthington on November 1, 2010. Also preceded in death by his mother Rose Gertrude (Betz) Thackeray, his step-father Lewis J. Thackeray, his brothers Harry Worthington and William Rominiecki, and his sisters Beatrice (Worthington) Hartman and Frances (Rominiecki) Jones.
He is survived by his children Margaret and her husband Scott, Matthew and his wife Amber, and Michael and his wife Tonya; his grandchildren Victoria, David, Erik, Sarah, Kassidy, Logan, and Ella; his great-grandchildren Athena, Artemis, Wodan, and Morrigan; his brother Lewis J. Thackeray Jr. and his sister Amanda (Thackeray) Donahue; and by numerous nieces and nephews
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30AM, Thursday, June 27, 2019 at Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 3435 E Trindle Rd, Camp Hill, with viewing one hour prior to Mass. Interment will be Indiantown Gap National Cemetery
