Jane R. Pope

Born in Harrisburg, PA on February 29, 1928, to the late Josiah Frederick Reed and Anna Duncan Wills Reed, she grew up in downtown Harrisburg, living above her father’s medical office near the Capitol. She attended the Katherine Sweeney Day School in Harrisburg and the Grier School in Tyrone, PA. Initially attending Randolph Macon College for Women, she transferred and obtained a bachelor’s degree from Lebanon Valley College.

Mrs. Pope had a productive career as a social worker, first with the PA Department of Welfare, and subsequently for Franklin County Special Education and the West Shore School District. In midlife, she earned a master’s degree in education at Millersville State College and worked as a special education teacher in Adams County until her retirement in 1991.

Service was an important value for Mrs. Pope, who was a member of the Harrisburg Junior League and throughout her life served in various hospital and senior care auxiliaries. She was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution, serving as Chair of Pages at the PA State Meeting in 1945, and was Past Regent of the Franklin County DAR Chapter.

She is preceded in death by her husband, George Frederick Pope II; her brothers, William Wills Reed, Josiah Frederick Reed, Jr., and John Frederick William Reed; and her sister, Anna Reed Dolbin.

She is survived by her daughter Alice Wild Pope (husband Ross Levin; daughter Anna Pope Levin) and sons, George Frederick (Jeff) Pope III (wife Karen; children Jeffrey Robert Pope and Lauren Frank), Andrew Duncan Pope (wife Sue; children Melissa Ann Pope and Andrew James Pope), and William Wills Pope (children Kristen Emily Pope, Brian Douglas Pope, and Matthew Alexander Pope).

A private burial service will be held at Duncannon Presbyterian Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Pine Street Presbyterian Church, where Mrs. Pope was a lifelong member.
