Born February 18, 1937 in Lancaster, OH, Esther graduated from Muskingum University in 1959 and became and elementary school teacher in the Columbus Public Schools. She married her life-long love of 53 years LCDR Bruce Walter Avis and established their home in Mechanicsburg, PA where they raised their son, Thomas Bruce Avis. Esther was an active member of the Dillsburg Community Church forming abiding friendships with the members. She was known for her generosity, love of golf, travel, bridge and vivacious gift for entertaining.
She is preceded in death by her parents Dr. Manson Estel and Esther Louise Nichols; her siblings, Betty Jeanne Younger, Martha Joanne Nichols and Manson David Nichols.
Esther is survived by her loving husband LCDR Bruce Walter Avis, devoted son Thomas Bruce and wife Karen Avis, cherished granddaughter, Anya Marie Avis; brother Dr. Donald and Marion Nichols; sister Marilyn deLacey; sister-in-law Barbara Nichols; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Glen and Silvija Avis and numerous nieces and nephews who brought her tremendous joy.
Due to current restrictions on social gathering, a private service will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery; Annville, PA 17003.
