His own great life began in Reading, PA with his parents, state police first sergeant Edward C. Sickel and Frances Malachowski, later joined by his sister, Marcia (Weir, deceased). He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Dickinson College in 1954 and University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine four years later. After interning in Harrisburg, serving as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, and doing his otorhinolaryngology residency at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA, he settled into private practice as an ear, nose, and throat specialist in Harrisburg.
While in medical school, he cut in on a dancing Daneen at a Valentine's Social. They married and raised three children in Camp Hill. Hiking and sailing in Eagles Mere, PA, and holidays spent with both sets of grandparents are only two of a host of grand memories. Ed was a very active father who devoted much time and energy to his family. By nature, Ed was serious but he also had a wonderful, goofy sense of humor and quite an imagination. He loved sharing his opinions, reading copious amounts of mostly WWII non-fiction (Winston Churchill was his hero, 2nd to his father), gardening, and, in later years, travelling extensively.
He leaves behind his wife Daneen (Karas), of 67 years along with his three children: Laura Mumma (Scott) of Dillsburg, Clint Sickel (Jeannette) of Lansdale,PA and Amy Sickel (Bill Burwell) of Potomac, MD. He will also be greatly missed by his grandchildren: Ben (Anh), Kate, Anna, Matthew, and Grace.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
