Passed away peacefully surrounded by his family after a brief illness on Saturday, April 24, 2010 in his 87th year.
Beloved husband of Sylva for 58 years. Much loved father of Paul (Cathy) of Cambridge, David of Vancouver, Maureen (Carm) Morra of Cambridge, and Dan of Guelph.
Beloved grandfather of John, Joseph and Madeline Whiteside; Krista and Alexis Whiteside of Vancouver and Rachael and Paul Morra. Will be sadly missed by many nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by parents John and Emily Whiteside, sister Margaret Mayes, brother Robert Whiteside.
Richard was born on September 1, 1923 in Guelph, Ontario where he spent most of his life. He was a proud veteran of WWII. After leaving the army Richard returned to Guelph where he worked at the Guelph Post Office for 32 years. Richard played in the Guelph Pipe Band for many years, indulging his passion for Highland bagpipe music. The most important thing in Richard’s life was his family. He was a devoted husband; a loving, supportive father and grandfather. Richard was a kind, gentle and selfless man who will remain in our hearts forever.
Richard’s family will receive friends at Barthel Funeral Home (566 Queenston Road, Cambridge) on Wednesday, April 28 from 7-9 p.m. Funeral Service to be held at Knox Preston Presbyterian (132 Argyle Street N., Cambridge) on Thursday, April 29, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. Cremation has taken place.
In Richard’s memory donations to the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
Richard’s family would like to thank Dr. Sproat and the ICU nurses at Cambridge Memorial Hospital for their understanding and compassion.
