Jean Horner passed away peacefully at home with the sun shining and the poppies in bloom the morning of Sunday May 26, 2024, with her husband of 60 years Philip by her side. Her husband and son were instrumental in fulfilling her wish to finish her life at home by caring for her these past few years.
She was born in Colne, Lancashire, England to Peter and Annie Ramsden (deceased), and is survived by siblings David and Wendy, children Lynda (Richard), Deborah (Wayne), and Christopher. She will be greatly missed by her grandchildren Rebecca (Stuart), Emma (Brendan), and Charlie as well as great-grandchildren Poppy, Daisy, Theodore, and Cecilia. We like to think she has joined her other grand-daughter Sarah in Heaven.
Before moving to Canada in 1987, Jean ran a clothing store with her best friend Pauline in the market centre where many could attest to her warmth and openness. Once in Canada she devoted her life and work to acts of service including working with dementia residents at Sunnyside, helping care for friends and neighbours or her various church and community volunteer projects. She also was an avid artist and poet, even having some of her works published. Those who knew her in anyway could attest to her kind, warm, positive, and loving nature. She could always find the bright side in a difficult situation and always encouraged us and those around her to be kind to others. She found comfort in her faith which guided not only how she treated other people but how she approached life. Even as she went further in her journey with Alzheimer’s she always maintained a sunny disposition and could greet you with a smile even when the words were lost.
Our family wants to thank everyone who has expressed condolences, but also their fond memories of Jean from across the years and from near and far. Her absence will leave a large void to those who knew and loved her, but hopefully we can take a page from her book and remember to lead with kindness, grace, and positivity.
In lieu of a funeral a celebration of her life will be held at a time and place to be advised later. Cremation has taken place. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Alzheimer's Society or your local Humane Society will be gratefully appreciated.
