Grandma – I will always remember you as a Grand Lady, so elegant and lovely.  A Goddess of the Sun.  Always out and about town.

I remember how my mother finally had to buy you an answering machine so that you would know that she had called, and how we were never sure which meeting or function you were at that day.  I remember laughing with my sister about how you had more of a social life than the two of us put together.

I remember how you ate honey on toast every morning, loved to dance, and would sneak treats to the dogs.  All of these things as wonderful and constant as you were.  I remember how you used to give me a chocolate “S” from Reid's Candy and Nut Shop every Christmas, one of my favourite memories.  I remember how you made my First Communion Dress and how I wore that beautiful veil dancing around the house for years afterwards.

I remember how you loved to watch sports, do jigsaw and crossword puzzles, and read books.   I remember how even when you were losing your hearing, you still listened with genuine interest to everyone and everything.  How much you loved life and the people around you, and how you never let anything slow you down.  How your answer to most things was always – “Yes Dear”, and how I will miss hearing you say “Well Hello Dear”.

I loved how fiercely independent you were and how much you loved your house.  I remember how much I used to love to visit your house, how I would chase garter snakes in the yard with the smell of lilacs and peonies in the air.  How you loved your garden and the birds that came to your feeders, and how you used to sit your rocking chair in your screened porch and enjoy both.

I loved your sense of spirit and adventure.  How you and Auntie Anne travelled by train all the way out to my wedding in the Rocky Mountains and how much it meant to me.

But most of all, I will remember and love the family you created as a mother, grandmother and great grandmother.  How the last time we visited you asked after my two girls, what Adelaide was learning in school, what Hugh was teaching and what I was doing at work.  How much you remembered, how much you cared.  How we talked about the painting of Cambridge that was hanging in your room, and I think now how amazing it is that you gave so much of yourself to your friends, neighbours, community and family there.  

And Grandma, I will never forget that you gave me my mother.  My strong, loving, kind, amazing mother – who will miss you terribly and will love you always.  We all love you.

I will think of you always, but especially when I pick up a crossword puzzle.  And when I call my mother and sister about an answer I don't know, and it completely stumps them too, I know that we will all say – “That's one that Grandma would have known.”

Anne and all family members:   some unforgetable memories of Helen...
I first knew Helen at the bank...she was most helpful and friendly....as I was new in town....
In memories at the old Galt Curling Club..she was my first SKIP in my novice year....our friendship grew through the years...visited her at home etc...
She was an outstanding member  of our Business Girls Section of the Curling club and loved by all....when Helen retired she was instrumental in getting many things together at the Senior Centre too ..
Also I was fortunate enough to have celebrated with her on her 90th birthday...she will be sadly missed but NEVER forgotten....
