He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Wai Wo Cheung; his children Leigh, Sam (Agnes), Christina, Lisa (Stan) and Susan; and his grandchildren Spencer, Sheldon, Sean, Peter, Sarah and Matthew. He leaves behind his brother Sen (Nancy), and many nephews, nieces, extended family members and close friends. He was predeceased by his parents Bing Shong Mah and Mee Karn Mah.
Ying was born in Ba Sa Village in Guangdong, China on December 12, 1926. He married Wai in 1953 and settled in Kowloon, Hong Kong where they had five children. On June 11, 1965, he immigrated to Canada on his own to seek new opportunities and a better life for his family. Settling in Calgary and working hard to become financially able to reunite with his family, his goal was achieved when his wife and young family joined him in Canada seven months later in January, 1966.
Ying’s greatest legacy was to instill the importance of family values, commitment and harmony. He was happiest when he was enjoying time with family, especially during the many family gatherings, celebrations and vacations. He was loved and well respected, and will be truly missed by his family and friends.
Ying was very active in the Chinese community and benevolent associations, and was a long-serving executive in The Chinese Freemasons & Dat Coon Club of Calgary, Hoy Sun Association, Mah Society of Calgary, and United Calgary Chinese Association. He was also involved with the Calgary Hung Mon Athletic Club and Jin Wah Sang Music Society. He was a talented musician and enjoyed playing the erhu (Chinese violin), and performed with a musical ensemble in many cultural events in Calgary. He will be remembered by many for his kindness, generosity, and integrity.
A private service will be held.
