He is survived by his wife Luise of 55 years; daughter Christina (Martin) Schapansky; son Michael, and granchildren Phillip and Alexandra. Werner is also survived by his brother-in-law, Franz Tigges of Germany, as well as nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Wilhem and Mathilda Weerts and his sister Wilma Tigges. Werner was born in Jever, Germany and set out to make a life in Canada in 1951. He started out as a lumberjack in Coleman and found his way to Calgary in 1957. Werner became one of the founding owners of Wemas Metal Products, manufacturer of various steel products. He was an active member of the German Canadian Club. He enjoyed traveling and he surrounded himself with many good friends.
As per Werner's wishes, a Celebration of Life will be held in the third Floor Hall - 6868 Sierra Morena Blvd S.W., on Saturday, March 1, 2014 starting at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, those so desiring may make a donation to a charity of your choice. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website www.fostersgardenchapel.ca.
