On the early evening of Tuesday, October 3, 2023 our beloved Wendy passed away at Cambridge Manor in Calgary, AB after a long battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) and Chronic Lyme Disease (CLD).
Her final moments were spent peacefully surrounded by all of her closest family and friends. Wendy was 71 years young.
Wendy Benson-Slager was born in the City of Calgary, AB on Monday, October 8th, 1951. She was the second child of Alice May and James Edward Brown.
Known for her caring heart, love and compassion for her family and friends, she was also known for her determination and resilience while always having a positive attitude no matter the situation she was facing. A saying she would often sing to her children was "Who cares about the weather, as long as we're together!"
Our warrior lived a life full of passions, in which she enjoyed learning, researching and creating. Her interests ranged throughout her life such as collecting antiques, refinishing furniture, writing short stories and poems, forensics science, horticulture, herbal medicine, creating natural beauty remedies, crocheting, spinning and of course, her favourite, knitting! No matter what the interest or task at hand was, she immersed her whole self into it, and always tried her best no matter what!
Wendy's final selfless act to humanity has been made by her generous donation to the Calgary Brain Bank (CBB); given with care and dignity. Her altruistic contribution will be a part of the advancement of research surrounding PSP, and potentially help future generations affected by this disease.
Wendy was a mother, wife, grandma, daughter, sister, auntie, cousin, nurse and a loyal friend. Wendy will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Wendy leaves behind her loving husband Patrick Slager; her children Yvonne (Andrew Bone) Benson and Emily (Kyle) Satnik; her stepchildren Rhonda (Mike) Carr and Paul Slager; 5 beautiful grandchildren Chloe (Satnik), Autumn, Hunter, Beckham & Aquinnah (Carr); sister Donna (Gerry) Bell and brother Robert (Debbie) Brown; former spouse George Benson and numerous dear nieces and nephews; former brother and sister in-law’s, cousins and friends; as well as her beloved dog Loki and can't forget her collection of yarn for her loved knitting projects.
Wendy was predeceased by her parents, James and Alice Brown and her brother Kevin Brown.
The Benson-Slager Family encourages her to be remembered for the joy she brought to others in life, not the sadness of her passing.
A Memorial Service will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Saturday, October 28, 2023. The family will receive friends and family there at 2:00 pm.
We invite you to increase your own awareness of Chronic Lyme Disease (CLD); with vigilance and early detection, simple treatment can be taken to divert a toll of serious ailments.
As well, we are in the process of locating a charity that concentrates on the support of individuals living with PSP and their families. If you are interested in making a donation on behalf of Wendy, please stay tuned and we will let you know the details once this has been confirmed.
