Vicki is survived by her children, Christopher (Patricia) and Nicholas Smart. Christopher is a resident of the UK whilst Nicholas has lived in Calgary since 1980. He was able to sponsor Vicki when she decided to emigrate from the UK to Canada in 1983 following the death of her husband at that time. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Alicia and Olivia Smart who live in the UK and Courtenay and Taylor Smart who were born in Calgary and now reside in Edmonton. Vicki is also survived by her friend and long-time companion, Stephen Nagy-Gyorgy; niece Patty; nephews, Paul and Philip and their respective families. She was predeceased by her sister, Kathy Cox, in November 2011 and husband, George Smart, in August 1982 in the UK. Vicki was born Mildred Alice Preston in Horwich, Lancashire on September 23, 1927. Her mother, Elizabeth, was a state registered nurse, state certified midwife and founding member of the Royal School of Nursing. The family moved several times before Vicki, her sister, Kathy and their mother settled on the south coast in Sussex. Vicki married Albert George Smart on November 27, 1948, and set up a family home at Emsworth on the West Sussex/Hampshire border in 1957. She worked for John Wyeth and Brother in Havant for 25 years particularly in accounts dealing with payroll/wages, until her husband’s death in 1982. Vicki retired when she moved to Calgary in 1983 and took up a number of outdoor hobbies. She ran with the Olympic Flame prior to the Calgary Winter Olympics of 1988. This inspired her to volunteer during the Olympics and beyond. Vicki contributed countless hours at the Canada Olympic Park, and achieved a Golden Ambassador Award for her services in 2003. Besides downhill skiing, gardening, playing golf and hiking, Vicki was an avid painter, mainly in water colours. Her outgoing and cheerful personality suited the outdoor life so readily available to her in Canada. Vicki continued to travel overseas, visiting family and friends in the UK and elsewhere, and to defy ill-health which had dogged her later years. But, above all, she enjoyed being active and having fun in the process.
