It is with great sadness that the family of Anthony Frank Leong, affectionately known as Tony, announce his sudden passing on Tuesday, April 9, 2024 after a valiant battle with cancer. He was 55 years old.
Tony was born, raised and schooled in Calgary alongside his siblings Pearl, Mike and Doug Leong. He graduated from John G. Diefenbaker High School in 1987 and pursued his passion for architecture obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies (1991) and a Masters of Environmental Design in Architecture in 1999.
Professionally, Tony was very respected in the architecture community as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Calgary and made significant contributions to the landscape of Calgary and Edmonton over his career. Most notably Tony was the lead designer and project manager for Poppy Plaza along the Bow River in Calgary and the Children’s Precinct at the Edmonton Valley Zoo.
Although Tony never married, Tony’s role as a dedicated, patient and loving Uncle was one of his greatest joys. His hobbies were a reflection of his multifaceted personality; he enjoyed sports, movies, video games, politics, and was a lifelong and diehard fan of the Michigan Wolverines. As a young man, Tony travelled the world visiting London, Barcelona, Argentina, Japan and the United States to name a few. No matter what Tony did or where he went, his positive and infectious attitude on life extended beyond his family.
Tony is survived by his father Richard; his mother Louise; his siblings Doug, Mike (Sharon), and Pearl (Jarrett); and his cherished nephew and nieces Carson, Madison and Naomi. Tony was an amazing son, brother and a loving uncle.
A Funeral Service to honour Tony’s life will be held on Friday, April 19, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Foster’s Garden Chapel 3220 – 4th Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery). Interment will follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
A Celebration of Life will be organized by Tony’s architectural firm, MBAC. The details of this event will be communicated at a later date.
A special thanks to all of Tony’s medical team at Tom Baker Cancer Care and Foothills Medical Centre.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Own Cancer at www.owncancer.ca.
Tony’s presence will be profoundly missed, but his memory will continue to be a beacon of warmth and joy for all those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
