June 6, 1934 – October 7, 2017
It is with great sadness that we announce that Ted Sorensen passed away in Calgary, at the age of 83. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Verna; 3 daughters, Karen (John Davis), Robyn, and Deidre; and 2 grandchildren, Allie and Matt; as well as brothers, sisters, and many cousins. Ted was born to Ruth and Albert Sorensen, in Dixonville, Alberta, on a homestead built by his Danish father. He grew up on a farm near Berwyn, before attending the Universities of Alberta and Wisconsin, for a PhD in Chemistry. He worked at the University of Calgary for more than 50 years and was globally respected for his many seminal contributions to and novel discoveries within the area of carbocation chemistry. Ted was also an adventurous soul, having travelled to 6 continents, climbed many mountains, and instilled a passion for the outdoors in his children and grandchildren. He loved the simplicity of picking berries or churning ice cream; the beauty of classical music; the joy of a well-tended garden that fed a neighbourhood; and the challenge of a game of chess with friends. His playful sense of humour, his kindness and honesty, his devotion to his students, friends and family, and his quiet wisdom will be greatly missed. A celebration of his life will take place at Foster’s Garden Chapel, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary on Friday October 13, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Society would warm our hearts.
