July 7, 1939 – May 22, 2013
Susan Ranger (nee Ellis), beloved wife of Guy Ranger of Calgary and Pender Island, BC, passed away in Calgary on May 22, 2013 at the age of 73 years. Susan was born in Dewsbury, Yorkshire, England. Together with her parents and younger brother, Tim, she immigrated to Canada at age 13. She met Guy while they both attended Strathcona Composite High School and they were married February 7, 1959 in Edmonton and had their three daughters there. In 1969, Susan, Guy and the girls moved to Red Deer where Susan began her post-secondary education achieving a Bachelor of Education. She became principal of Satinwood School near Joffre, Alberta and upon the family relocating to Calgary in 1979, she taught at Alberta Vocational Centre (now Bow Valley College) teaching English as a Second Language. While the girls were growing up, the family took many long camping trips through North America and Europe. Guy and Susan bought an ocean-front lot on Pender Island, BC in the late 70’s and spent many summers in a trailer there, eventually building their dream home where they spent much of their time, particularly in the last several years. Susan was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis thirty-five years ago. Although a considerable portion of her life was spent in a wheelchair, she never lost her sunny disposition or sense of humour. She was involved with the MS Society for many years and enjoyed travelling, reading, gardening and watching the “active view” from her deck on Pender. Besides her loving husband, Susan will be missed by her three daughters, Jennifer (Jim Bell), Catherine (Don Seager) and Patricia and her grandchildren Meagan & Christian McKenzie and Patrick, Margaret & Paul Seager, all of Calgary. Susan is also survived by her brother Tim Ellis of Chemainus, BC. She was predeceased by her parents, Len and Madge Ellis. A Memorial Service will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. If friends so desire, donations in Susan’s honour may be made directly to the MS Society of Canada, Suite 150, 9405 - 50 Street Edmonton, Alberta T6B 2T4.
