Sun Tak (黄新德) was born in Hong Kong on April 13, 1930. He was one of seven children to his parents Wong Wing Yue (黄榮裕) and Yung Mei Foon (翁美歡). He was their first son; he had two older sisters, two younger sisters and two younger brothers.
His father passed away early and as the consequence of the Japanese invasion of China and the occupation of Hong Kong during WWII, he only partially completed elementary school and started working to support the family in his early teens. He learned on the job and took on an apprenticeship to later become a welder.
He married his wife Ng Sau Mui (吳秀梅) in 1960. Together they have three children, Ken Wong, Maggie Wong, and Sandy Wong.
1968 was a life changing year for Sun Tak. He barely escaped when the ship under repair he was working on caught fire and he was badly burned. After a long recovery journey, he resumed working to support his then still young family.
After retirement, Sun Tak along with his wife and daughters moved to Calgary in 1993 to be with his son’s family. His gentle nature helped to establish close relationships with his two grandchildren, Jonathan and Leanne. He was delighted and proud to see them grow up and finish university.
Being a mostly healthy person, he survived the pandemic; however, age started to catch up to him last year. In the past seven months, the compassionate caring staff of Rainbow Terrace at Bethany Calgary took very good care of him, which could be seen on his smiling face whenever he walked or was wheeled around the building and met with a staff member caring for him personally.
Sun Tak is lovingly remembered by: his wife Ng Sau Mui; his son Ken (Kwok Leung) Wong and daughter-in-law Jennifer (Yet Shun) Wong, grandson Jonathan Wong and granddaughter Leanne Wong; his daughter Maggie (Man Yi) Wong; his daughter Sandy (Wai Yee) Wong and son-in-law Yue Chuen Leung, and their son Winston Leung. Wong Sun Tak is also survived by his brothers Wong Yun Hing and Wong Tin Fook.
A Funeral Service will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Sunday, June 4, 2023, at 10 a.m. Cremation will follow the service.
