With joyful remembrance, we celebrate the remarkable life of So Ngor (Sue) Wong, who passed away peacefully on September 14, at the age of 88. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Sue lived a life defined by love, laughter, and song, leaving an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
Sue was the cherished wife of Yok Tong (Chuck) Wong, with whom she shared a lifetime of love and memories. Together, they raised a beautiful family, and Sue took immense pride in her role as a devoted mother to Willey (Lily), Arthur (Anne), and Elaine (Wes). As a grandmother, her heart overflowed with joy. She treasured every moment with her grandchildren—Lauren and Trevor (Andrea), Austin and Andrew, Mackenzie, and Maclaine—and was thrilled to welcome her great-grandson Jake last year.
Born in Taishan, Guangdong, China, as the eldest of ten children, Sue moved to Hong Kong in her teenage years. In 1956, she married Chuck, and in 1966, she immigrated to Calgary, Canada, where Sue began working as a seamstress at the Calgary Inn. She later worked at Cara Flight Kitchen, retiring in 1981 to care for her mother-in-law until her passing in 1987. Known for her tireless work ethic and deep dedication to family, friends, and relatives, Sue’s selflessness and love touched many.
Sue was an active and treasured member of the Chinese community in Calgary. She contributed significantly through her involvement with the Wong’s Affinity Association, the Chinese Freemasons, and the Lioness Club. Her passion for music, especially Chinese opera, and her love for singing were constants in her life. Her voice was a source of joy, whether at public gatherings, community choirs, or intimate family celebrations. Beyond her talent for singing, she loved to travel with friends and family, finding joy in exploring new places and cultures. Her travels brought her a deep sense of wonder, and she always returned home with vibrant stories to share.
Gardening and Chinese pastry-making were among her many hobbies, and she took pleasure in growing and cooking more than her family could ever need. Sue generously shared the fruits of her labor with others, embodying her nurturing spirit and the joy she found in giving.
Sue’s kindness, humor, and love radiated to all who crossed her path. Her zest for life and her ability to find joy in every moment will forever be remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing her. She leaves behind a legacy filled with family, love, and laughter.
In honor of So Ngor Wong’s vibrant life, a private memorial was held with her family.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Wing Kei Care Centers (https://www.wingkeicarecentre.org/donate) in celebration of her passion for life and the joy she brought to the world through her care and generosity.
