Sarah was the beloved wife to John (predeceased), mother to Linda (Chris) Melis, Sandra (Dan) Oelhaupl, and James (Kathy) Pfeifer; grandmother to Shenara (Luke), Justine (Peter), Kyla (predeceased), Joshua (Daniela) and Ashley, and great-grandmother to Josephine and Delilah.
Sarah was born in Netherburn, Dalserf, Lanark, Scotland on September 8th, 1934. She was the youngest of 4 children (predeceased); William, Jean and Margaret. She was named Sarah by her father who was under strict orders from his wife, Sarah Falconer, not to name their daughter Sarah so she was called `Cissie´. Sadly, Sarah lost her father at the age of 4 and never had the opportunity to know him, but we are sure she inherited her dry and witty sense of humour from him. Subsequently Sarah grew up in a household with a working mother who cultivated her strong work ethic. After leaving school early to work in a Larkhall store, Sarah went on to study nursing at Stonehouse Hospital and then at the age of 23 immigrated to Canada to begin her Canadian nursing career. It was a courageous adventure that she embarked on with her friends, landing first in Hamilton, Ontario in March of 1958 and then coming west to Calgary, Alberta in 1960. It was here in Calgary that Sarah met her future husband John who had also recently immigrated from Germany and together their romance blossomed into marriage on June 29, 1962, followed by the arrival of their 3 children; Linda, Sandra and Jamie. Together, Sarah and John raised their children in the community of Bowness. Sarah worked as a registered nurse at the Calgary General Hospital and later kept the financial records for her husband’s welding company. One Christmas Eve when Sarah was working late at the hospital, John ordered take out Chinese food and little did they know that small event would develop into a long-standing family tradition.
Sarah will always be remembered as the Scottish lady with the thick accent. People would ask her repeatedly for her address just to hear her roll her R`s. Her quirky sense of humour will live on in our memory as we are sure she is holding up the line at the pearly gates while she tells her `There is no F in Butter` joke to Saint Peter. Sarah always said she hoped her children would miss her when she was gone…Her children will dearly miss her as will those that had the pleasure of knowing her.
A Celebration of Life will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary, Alberta (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Saturday, December 21, 2024 at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Sarah`s name directly to the Alberta Children’s Hospital through their website at https://www.childrenshospital.ab.ca
