Roland Herbert Ward passed away peacefully at the Chinook Hospice on Monday, August 10, 2015 at the age of 89 years. Roland was a man of integrity, loyalty and trust. He loved sports, family, and did not shy away from hard work. He grew up in England enjoying rugby, Scouts, cycling, swimming and other outdoor pursuits. Roland joined the Royal Navy and sailed the world. He met Joan in Venezuela where they both worked for Shell. They immigrated to Canada in 1957 and lived in Ontario and Quebec before settling in Calgary in 1965. Roland was an accountant and studied to get his Certified General Accountant designation while raising the family and working full-time. He worked for Manalta Coal for 25 years until his retirement in 1992. In retirement, Roland and Joan enjoyed more travel. Roland continued to be active. He joined a fitness club and took up downhill skiing. Roland is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joan; their children Anne (Brian), Doug (Janet) and Chris (Linda); grandchildren Nathan (Sarah) and Hailey; and three great-grandchildren Odin, Henry and Rex. Roland was predeceased by his brother John and his granddaughter Chelsea. The family wishes to thank the staff at Foothills Hospital (Units 82 and 72) and Chinook Hospice for their compassionate care. A Celebration of Roland’s Life will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Tuesday, August 18, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to the Royal Canadian Legion, Poppy Trust Fund, 1-4539 6 Street N.E., Calgary T2E 3Z6.
