In World War II he served in the Royal Canadian Air Force as an airframe mechanic and an aircraft inspector. He studied drafting at SAIT in Calgary and worked in Toronto on the Avro Arrow. In Calgary he worked as a Draftsman for about 20 years with the Calgary School Board, retiring in 1984.
While in Toronto, Dick met his wife Edith (nee Jones) and they married in 1956. They eventually settled in Calgary.
He is survived by his two children, David and Tricia, siblings Jim, Frank, and Inez, and many extended family members. He is predeceased by his wife Edith, and siblings George, Roy, and Emma.
Dick enjoyed music and played the button accordion and the harmonica. He spent many years of his retirement playing harmonica with the Harmonica Tableau Band. Dick also enjoyed hiking and biking in the outdoors. A life-long member of the Hostelling Association, he volunteered his time to help build some of the early hostels in Alberta. He was also a long time member of the Seniors Outdoor Club of Calgary. Dick travelled the world and visited every continent except Antarctica.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, April 13 at 1:30 pm at Living Spirit United Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Living Spirit United Church, 629 – 49 Ave SW, Calgary, AB T2S 1G6 or to a charity of choice.
