Minetta Lorraine Angela Norrie (ANGI) suffered a fatal ski mountaineering avalanche accident Friday, March 14, 2025. Minetta was only 34 years old. This accident happened below tree line on Black Prince Mountain, Kananaskis Country. Minetta was the only skier caught in this avalanche and she was immediately located by her three companions within 20 minutes but was unresponsive despite prolonged resuscitation.
Minetta was a passionate outdoor advocate with ski mountaineering, her ultimate joy. She was raised in an “outdoor family “and a “dog family”. Born in Duncan, BC December 17, 1990, she moved with her family to Calgary in 2000. Besides skiing, ANGI was an enthusiastic hiker, camper, climber, mountain biker, kayaker, canoer and blue water sailor. ANGI was an adventurer. She traveled widely to: Cuba, Caribbean Islands , South American Andes, South East Asia, Amazon jungle, India, New Zealand, South Pacific, Europe, and canoed on the Yukon’s Nahanni River and through Nunavut on the Back River. Minetta sailed across the South Pacific to French Polynesia, Nuia, Tonga and Fiji in her family yacht and cycled the length and breadth of New Zealand. Minetta had a lot of the world to see, she took no prisoners and travelled fast and far.
Professionally ANGI loved her university studies earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology and teacher’s certification from the University of Northern BC. Angi’s love of learning transferred immediately to the love of teaching “her kids”. She has been working for the Calgary Board of Education, lastly at Cappy Smart Elementary School. ANGI loved “her kids “it was never work for ANGI but it was her love and it was her career.
Minetta is survived by her partner Shane Hauser. Together they shared a relationship beyond words. These two carried on the Norrie blended dog family tradition loving their three beautiful puppies. Minetta’s surviving family include: her parents, Lanice Jones and William Norrie, step mom Cathy Norrie, brothers Willis and Eric Norrie, step brother Cameron Shirvell and her cousin Nisha Costello. Minetta will be sorely missed by many many friends and the world has lost one of the finest humans. Minetta will be remembered as generous, ambitious, sweet, brilliant and beautiful inside and out.
A Memorial Service will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary, Alberta (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Sunday, March 23, 2025 at 2:00 p.m.
