Mike Parkinson was my instructor and he was a good mentor and friend. When i was in school at SAIT from 2003to2006. When ever I needed some help he was their, and always offered a candy before sitting by his desk at his office. We had some laughs, and gave some tips.

I left SAIT last summer and I just learned of Mikes passing. I always looked forward to Mike coming to my office in search of my treats in the candy jar. Mike was one of the reasons I enjoyed going to work and Mike will always be in my thoughts. My condolences go out to the family.

I met Mike when I joined the University of Calgary Library in 1985, and appreciated his warmth, candour, sense of humour and most of all his dedication to his students and the library community in Alberta and Canada.  It's been many years since I had the good fortune of connecting with Mike at local events and provincial conferences, but I am very saddened nonetheless at the loss of this fine man.

To Nancy and all others who are missing Mike. I entered the LIT program at the age of 49. Mike encouraged me, helping with the process to transfer as many other program credits towards my diploma as possible. When I first met Mike at the SAIT open house, we commiserated about the loud hall, where he couldn't understand a word I said. Moving to a quieter location, his shy grin was so memorable. What a loss overall.

I am so sorry to read of Mike's passing. He was so much a part of the SAIT LIT program, and indeed the Alberta library community. I got to know him when I was first appointed as Library Director at Mount Royal College (as it was then) and became a teleconference tutor for SAIT's Rural Library Education program. As I write this I have Mike's warm voice echoing in my head. My condolences to Mike's many friends and colleagues, and especially to his family.

I am so sorry to hear the bad news about Mike. First month When I took LIT program, Mike knew that I am a second language student and not very confidence about my courses , he gave me a lot of help and encourage . Thanks Mike, I will remember your encourage forever.

The end of life is always a sad and bad news. But somehow for Mike I believe it is only a new way of start for him. We, who are left behind, have so much to learn from him. He was a kind and happy man, always. As my collague here at SAIT, I will alwyas remember her academic activities always done with a good spirit and a fantastic sense of humour. I keep thinking about his children, whom Mike talked so much about when he knew he was ill. I had the honor of having Mike as a tutor through SAIT for many years,  I just last week finished my program and I am sure that I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Mike.  His constant concern for my best interest made the time I have spent pleasant and he will be greatly missed.  I am sorry I didn't know sooner as I would have made the trip to Calgary to say farewell, for now, to a wonderful man.  For his family I pray that you know that your loss is heaven's gain.

Mike was one of my instructors at SAIT, first online, then for a night class and finally as full time student. He always encouraged and no matter how busy he always had the time to help. I remember him as being extremely proud of his family.

The library community has lost a great advocate.

We have known Mike since our boys were in hockey..Know that our thought and prays are with the family in this terrible time... We are out of town so unable to attend service.

My deepest sympathy Nancy. Courtenay, Dylan, Jonathan, and Michael Thomas. I remember taking Intro to Libraries with Mike in Spring 1996. I was unsure if that was the career path I wanted to take. I was convinced by the end of that 1st class. There are so many memories from classes. The outstanding one will always be in Referencing when Mike would tell us to “Open those books, look at them. feel them, smell them.” Whenever I look at an ever decreasing reference collection I think of his love and enthusiasm for those books. He passed on so much knowledge to all of us. Thank you, Mike.

Even as a visitor to Calgary, I was constantly reminded of Mike and Nancy as being one of the best neighbours one could ask for.  Mike was that - helpful and friendly.  Somehow I don't think Mike shoveled the sidewalks for his neighbours just for the extra exercise...    

But I did learn that Mike enjoyed the three finest things in life:  wine, raspberries,  and song!  (I may have missed one or two other important things.)  I certainly missed out on sharing his love of folk song, but Mike was not hesitant to share his appreciation of good wine!  I will miss this kind, gentle and thoughtful soul.

From the guest book entries you can see what a wonderful impact Mike has had on many Calgary library professionals.  Reading these entries makes you feel sad and brings a smile to your face all at the same time. 

Even though he also gave me some of those head shakes and the "Oh no, what do you want?" greetings, I very much consider it a privilege to have had Mike as one of my instructors. His dry witt, flexibility, good humour and occassional just plain goofiness will be truly missed.

It's hard to believe that I'll never lean over the fence to speak with Mike again.
He was a VERY good neighbor, and our whole family will miss him.

I was fortunate to hire Mike as an instructor for the LIT program some thirty years ago.  So it's gratifying to read the scores of paeans left in this guest book by the many whose lives he touched.  After I left the LIT program in 1987, we would periodically bump into each other on the SAIT campus.  Usually we'd discuss the vicissitudes of life, and he'd invariably end our conversation with a wry smile and his memorable tagline, "But I'm not bitter."

I am not sure if I will be in the guest book twice since my computer just zapped but in the short time I have known Mike, he had managed to become someone special. I graduated in 2009 from the Library Tech. program at SAIT and I have used him as a reference. Mike was one great man. In the short time I have known Mike, he was one of my favourite people! He was also one of my school references as I finished the Library Tech. program in 2009. It's fair to say that wouldn't be in the position I hold in my career if it weren't for Mike. I remeber the day I came up from Lethbridge to interview him about the course. At the end of our time together I was encouraged and passionate to become a library technician. I left knowing I wanted t be his student.

Indeed, due to his care, I have heard praise for the L.I.T. program that it was equal to many MLS programs in the United States.  I may have gained much technical knowledge from time under Mike's watch. However, the one parting wisdom that I recieved from hime that has permenance is, "I can give you all the head knowledge to be a good tech, but if you cannot deal with people you will fail." 

What a gruff, wise old owl you were, Teacher. You join the ranks of the few who were so right and who had impact.

I had the opportunity to learn, laugh and grow in Mike's classes during my 1999-2001 LIT program.  Indeed, his sense of dry humour, incredulous looks, and care of - and for - his students and the LIT program were constants. I fondly remember Michael, and his outstanding mustache of the time, from my early years at ACA. His mild look of incredulity, at some current state of affairs, usually preceded a memorable bit of humour.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Mike was a great instructor of both the technical and practical side of libraries.  His influence in the Library community will be missed.

Mike's classes are one of my fondest memories of my time in the SAIT LIT program. His reference question samples always made us laugh and to this day, I think of him whenever I hear about the Green Bay Packers, Cheryl Ladd, Spinoza, or bourbon. Few teachers make such a positive -- and lasting -- impression as Mike. His passing is a great loss to all former and future library students. My deepest sympathies go to Mike's family, friends, and colleagues. His many fine qualities will be sorely missed.

I, as well, first met Mike on-line. He was one of my tutors as I completed the Introductory course. He seemed to be a man of few words. When I registered in the Library Information Technology program and started classes, this impression was confirmed. Being a painter and not a pointer it took me awhile to get used to him. Over the course of the two years, I started to see his quiet humour and steady character. I broke my ankle in the last semester and ended up needing to work from home. He always had an encouraging word and was willing to work things out so I could still complete my credits. I graduated in 2008.
 There will be a hole for a long time at the department. His shoes will be hard to fill. My condolences to Mike's family on your loss.

Mike was one of the best teachers I ever had. He was always willing to do just about anything to help his students succeed. For certain assignments, he had us invent fictitious library names, and he always insisted that there be no Mike Parkinson Memorial libraries. It is bittersweet indeed to think that now there could be a library named to honour this kind and caring man.

May I express my deepest sympathies to Mike's family. He leaves a big hole in many hearts.

I knew Mike quite well over the years having joined the faculty at SAIT about the same time. To say that he was a special person seems to somehow diminish his strengths. He was a well loved and respected instructor and colleague. While we worked in different departments, we would often go out of our way to talk—often just to get a different perspective on something. After I retired, I did see him briefly (usually while shopping) and it was as though we had just been together a few hours before. Truly a worthy colleague and one who left you feeling better for having interacted with him—he will be missed.

The library community has sadly lost a great advocate and teacher. I always enjoyed Mike's classes at SAIT -- we laughed and learned at the same time. It was clear that Mike cared about his students and wanted them to do well. My deepest condolences to Mike's family, friends and colleagues.

I was a student of the LIT program from 2001-2003. Mike was a great teacher. I remember him as a calm, funny and carefree person. He was a little disorganized and I sent a few time with him looking for assignments that were "misplaced" I always had two copies just in case. It is so sad that he passed away. I am glad that I knew him.

Where do I begin? I could tell you about the first time I met Mike as a student in 1985. I walked into his office for advice and found him surrounded by mounds of paper. He calmly pulled a small note from under three feet of material and gave me the answer. He always believed there was order in chaos! 
I could tell you about how deflated he was every time the Packers lost a game -- which was a lot -- and he had a hard time teaching without mentioning the team in every sentence. 
Or his "singing" abilities that I experienced after graduation when I worked with Mike at SAIT. His favourite song was "Fernando" by ABBA which he listened to constantly. He would burst into song every time it played but the only word he remembered was "doe" and it would echo over the walls of our office space. 
He would write notes on student assignments that needed a cryptographer to decipher. 
He was never too busy to help or talk even when late for class. "Walk with me" he'd say, but you had to run to keep up!
He was witty, messy, philosophical, tardy, extremely intelligent, uncomfortable when hugged (so I did it often), loyal to his friends, a generous and loving father and partner, and he had an impact on everyone he met. You just couldn't help loving him, he was one of those very lovable people that are rare in life. 
Friends, colleagues and students benefited from his life and we will keep him our hearts forever. We were very lucky to have known him.

My deepest condolences for your immense loss. Mike was a dedicated instructor who went above and beyond the classroom and was one of the biggest advocates for Library Technicians. I feel fortunate for having the chance to know him.

If everyone were fortunate enough to work with the likes of Mike Parkinson the world would be a happier, more sane place. There would be more laughter and more encouragement to do your very best. Mike was caring, concerned, committed and extremely dedicated to his students and his coterie of colleagues, instructors and staff at SAIT. I was privileged to teach a course for Mike every September and I always looked forward to his mentoring and his wry sense of humour. I was never fortunate enough to make his Christmas parties but I gather he made a wicked chili!

His compassion for others was immense and his sense of humour incredible. Even after graduation, when our paths would cross he was happy to see me and remembered my name.
