It is with heavy hearts that the Acton Family announce the passing of Margaret Acton of Calgary, Alberta at the age of 93. She is the mother of Gary (Rita) of Calgary, Leigh Anne (Greg Aman) of Calgary, and Brian (Shelly) of Southampton, Ont. Margaret had six beloved grandchildren, Matt (Krista) Rowe of Ripley, Ont., Devin Aman of Calgary, Rachel and Marie Acton of Calgary, and Abby and Carly Acton of Southampton; two great grandchildren, Kayden and Lacey-Mae of Ripley, as well as many nieces and nephews across Canada. Margaret was the second oldest of six children and is predeceased by her parents, Alice and Kenneth MacKenzie, and siblings Clarence, Anne, George, and Bessie. She is survived by one sister, Leone Anderson of Stratton Ont.
Margaret always had an adventurous spirit, which prompted her to leave her much loved family and their small homestead in rural Ontario for the big city life in Toronto before turning 16 years old. She worked hard all her life, travelling as much as she could in her younger years before marrying and settling down in Hamilton to start a family in her early thirties. Margaret and family moved from Hamilton to Port Elgin in 1959 where they owned and operated the North Shore Cottage business before selling and purchasing the “Rendevous Restaurant” in Southampton. She was an excellent cook and her meals were enjoyed by many. She spent many years in Southampton before moving to Chilliwack, B.C. to be close to her first grandchild, Matthew. As the family grew, Margaret made her way to Calgary to be close to her four grandchildren at that time. Margaret loved living in downtown Calgary in her later years. She spent many hours walking and on transit exploring the city, often with close friends she made at the Oddfellow Rebecca building where she lived and different senior groups she was involved with.
Marg was able to make one last trip back to Southampton 8 years ago when the whole family spent a week together enjoying the town she would always call home and reminiscing upon fond memories there. She will be remembered as a hard working single mom who gave her kids everything they ever needed, while it meant doing without for herself.
The family would like to thank everyone for their kind words and prayers at this time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Calgary Women's Emergency Shelter Association, www.calgarywomensshelter.com.
The Funeral will be held at South Calgary Funeral Centre & Crematorium, 12700 Macleod Trail South (at Lake Fraser Gate) on Wednesday January 6, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Please join us in celebrating the life of our beloved mother and grandmother.
