Born on December 3, 1943 in San Francisco Gotera, Morazan, El Salvador, Luis lived the majority of his life in El Salvador before moving to Canada with his family on February 18, 1993.
Luis will be lovingly remembered and mourned by his adoring wife, Lidia Medrano; his loving children, Mirna McHattie (David), Ruth Martinez (Juan), Luis Medrano (Ruth), Alba Medrano and Sergio Medrano (Denia). Luis “Abuelo” will be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Paulina Medrano, Alexis Martinez, Jocelyn Martinez, Yesenia Martinez, Andrew McHattie and Sofia McHattie.
Luis was raised by his parents, Valentin and Mercedes Medrano, in rural San Francisco Gotera, El Salvador. Growing up on a farm, Luis was one of fifteen children and the hard work that comes with agriculture was not something that he or his siblings were unfamiliar to.
He left to the United States shortly after the passing of his father. He spent some time here before returning to El Salvador. He moved to Mejicanos, San Salvador, and it was here that he was introduced to his wife, the love of his life, Lidia by one of her cousins.
Lidia and Luis got married in Suchitoto on April 6, 1974 and shortly thereafter began their family. His family’s well-being was Luis’ number one priority. He led his family with their very best interests in his heart. Due to his strong character, he was a leader and a mentor to many.
Luis was a people’s person who loved to converse, joke and debate with others. He was well-read and widely informed, especially of politics. He selflessly helped others, expecting nothing in return. He could always put a smile on anyone’s face with his quick-witted comments and charm. He especially enjoyed serenading his family members on their birthdays with his harmonica.
Decisive, strong-willed, playful and loving, Luis will be profoundly missed by all those who were blessed to meet him.
Luis’ Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Spirit Parish, (10827 24 St SW, Calgary, AB), on Tuesday, April 2, 2019 at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations being made in Luis’ memory directly to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, (www.heartandstroke.ca).
