December 27, 1936 - October 23, 2014
Dad’s picture hangs in the Chemical Engineering Building at the University of Alberta, with the class of 1958. He was born in Calgary, grew up in modest means, and worked hard to put himself through Engineering School. It was at school that he met his wife of 54 years, Vicky. They married and started a family that became the center of his life. Together he and mom started his 32 year career in Oil and Gas, a career that never got in the way of his life. Dad was successful and admired at work. He was always active, participating in a variety of sports such as badminton, golf, cycling and tennis with mom. He coached our teams, attended our plays, and helped us with our projects. He was always home for dinner, and the family vacationed every year. When he retired at 55 he remained active as an ex-pat in Malaysia and Uruguay, travelling and experiencing the world. When he was 60 he started his final and favorite career, being Grandfather to his five grandchildren. He made them his full time job, because he loved nothing more. Before he passed at the age of 77, dad had accomplished and experienced everything he wanted. He passed in peace and satisfaction, not wishing to change a single moment of his life. At the end, our last conversations, and his last words to me, were of his grandchildren. Dad passed holding the hand of his daughter, having said good-bye to all of those grandchildren, knowing that he was loved by his family. Still here are his wife Vicky; his sister Dixie; his granddaughters Nicole, Rachel and Sydney; his daughter Tracy; his grandsons Christopher and Matthew, and his son David (Marcia). He was predeceased by his son-in-law Danny. At Dad’s request there will be no ceremony to celebrate his life. But we ask all of his family and friends to reflect upon their moments with him, and to appreciate their families as we appreciate the one that Dad built. Finally, our family thanks all the compassionate caregivers at the Foothills Hospital for looking after not only dad, but mom who sat beside him. We offer special thanks to Drs. Kannin Osei-Tutu and Glen Manders, in whose care Dad insisted on remaining until the end. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website www.fostersgardenchapel.ca.
