Ken Hancock

With heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Ken, after a long brave battle with Parkinson’s. Ken was the founder and president of ComputerState Systems Inc., a very successful industrial computer development, design and assembly company which he started in 1991. He started his career in 1973, at Defense Research Establishment Suffield as an Electronic Technologist in Electronic Design. He was the manager of many Edmonton businesses in start-up stages, such as Datek Industries and WestWorld Computers Ltd. In 1985, he was Programmer Analyst for the Provincial Laboratory of Public Health, in Edmonton, where he developed and documented the automation requirements for the IBM PC/XT. In 2006, Ken and his wife and business partner of 30 years Barbara, retired and built an off-grid power system for their beautiful home in Brisco, BC. Ken and Barbara were blessed with three wonderful children, Taryn Ann, Stacy Raine and Kenneth Ryan. His love of music and science was always a part of his life. He was a very accomplished musician, song writer and had several guitars. Left to mourn his loss are his wife Barbara (nee Petley-Jones), three children Taryn of Vancouver, Stacy of Calgary and Ryan (Nadia) of Calgary; his sisters Evelyn Hancock of Calgary and Julie Matthews (Jim) of Lethbridge; brother-in-law Russ Jones (Irene) of Calgary; sister-in-law Alice McLeod of Edmonton; as well as nieces and nephews Meghan Wolfe, Derek Wolfe, Alicia Bulmer (Mark), Nathan Matthews, Amara Matthews, Ken McLeod, Stuart McLeod, Rod McLeod, Jody McLeod, Kerry McLeod, Lisa Leahy and nine great-nieces and nephews. Ken was predeceased by his brother Richard on March 15, 2009; mother Johanna (van Hulst) Goerzen on October 21, 2013; and father Roy Hancock on April 3, 1996. A Memorial Service will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary, AB (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website www.fostersgardenchapel.ca.
