It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Judy Stevens, beloved mother, grandmother and dear friend to so many. Despite a lifetime commitment to healthy living, she courageously struggled with cancer in her final year. Judy left this world on the morning of April 1st with her family by her side at the Foothills Hospital in Calgary.
We will remember Judy for her bright spirit, her irrepressible and adventurous nature, her humility and selfless service and her fierce thirst to live each day fully. She followed her own path yet somehow always put the needs of others first. Unfailingly kind, Judy had a rare capacity to fully accept others without judgment. She met her allotted share of life’s challenges without rancour, bitterness or self-pity. She was a source of unstinting and practical support to many. Optimistic, determined, generous and deeply curious, she lived a good life – although alas it was shorter than the 103 years she hoped for!
Judy moved to Canmore from Ontario in 2009 and grew to love the mountains which she continued to hike until the end. She volunteered her time to numerous local organizations and community events and was known across town as “Grandma Judy” by the many families who relied on her for childcare and support. Many younger folk enjoyed her company and often found her outlook and youthful energy inspiring. She loved live music, the natural world, new ideas, holistic philosophies and perennial wisdom traditions. At an age when most of her contemporaries were ‘retiring’, Judy set off to backpack around the world. She never stopped learning and exploring.
Above all, Judy cherished her family who will miss her beyond words. She was always there for us. She did not wish for a sombre funeral but invited those who wish to honour her memory to gather with their own loved ones, to do or share something that brings them closer together, and to consciously cherish these brief and beautiful moments we have with each other. And perhaps to raise a glass in memory and gratitude.

They know the art of dying,
And leave with joy their glad gold hearts,
In the scarlet shadows lying…"
