December 2, 1927 – Central Butte, SK
November 22, 2017 – Calgary, AB
John “Dick” Turner passed away at the age of 89 years on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 in Calgary, AB, with his loving wife, Emma, at his side.
John lived on the family farm until 1945. During the late 1940’s he tried rock mining. With the onset of the Korean War, John served his country by joining the Navy (Naval Aviation). His service allowed him to tour many places and prepared him for life’s lessons. John was honoured on June 2, 1953 to march in Queen Elizabeth II’s Coronation. In 1958 while on leave, John met and married Emma Bartel and they began their 57 year life journey starting in Halifax, NS and ending up in Calgary, AB in 1975. He worked in retail and they purchased their first farm in Langdon, AB. Here they enjoyed tending to the garden and cattle and explored their love of outdoor life which included camping and hiking in the mountains. During his later years, John’s health declined. This prevented him from actively working on the farm. John was an exceptional writer, putting pen to paper and writing his story. It is that story, a life well lived, that we Celebrate.
John is survived by his wife of 57 years, Emma; brother Bob (Cleo) Turner; brother-in-law Tom Hill; nieces Cathy, Karen and Patti; as well as nephews Brian and Robert. He was predeceased by his parents Allan and Jean Turner and his sister Janet Hill.
Emma wishes to express her sincere thanks to Dr. S. Schorr and all the wonderful staff on Units 27 & 37 of the Foothills Medical Centre for their excellent care.
