He is survived by his son, Randy (Anne) Haynes; daughter Carol Cranston (Glenn); seven grandchildren, Michael (Amy) Cranston, Brandi (John) MacKenzie, Ryan Haynes, Matthew (Rattyya) Haynes, Jason (Amanda) Zimmer, Jennifer (Chad) Brazil and Jason (Mariann) Valstar as well as 14 great grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers, Lawson Haynes, Roger (Doris) Haynes and Elwood (Shirley) Haynes. Newell was predeceased by his bride of 59 years, Shirley Georgia Haynes (nee Spielman) in 2007 and daughter, Linda in 2009; brother, Lionel and sisters, Mildred, Blanche, Reita and Ruth. Newell was born to Ethel and Elmore Haynes in the back of an ambulance on January 1, 1928, their New Year baby. He was raised in East Calgary until his marriage to Shirley on June 5, 1948. His love of trains led him to a 46 year career with Canadian Pacific Railway (Alyth). Newell was a member of the CP Rail Retirees Club and met monthly for lunch with his former management team. Newell will be remembered as a hardworking man, dedicated to his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He spent many happy years camping and vacationing with family and friends in Kananaskis, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and Waikiki, Hawaii. He was a faithful servant of God and served the congregation of St. Matthew Lutheran Church in various capacities since 1958. In recent years, you could always find Newell at various restaurants: Twoonie Tuesdays at KFC, Sunridge Mall each Thursday for chinese and Fish and Chips Friday at the Legion.
Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at a visitation held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Friday, November 22, 2013 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 66 7 Street N.E., Calgary on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to St. Matthew Lutheran Church Society.
