Jin Ho Wong was born in Toisan, China on October 20, 1929. In 1954, he married Ling, and shortly thereafter immigrated to Canada to build a life for his newly expectant wife. Before settling in Calgary, Jin lived in various locations throughout Canada including Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal. After spending 9 years alone in Canada building a foundation, Ling and Jin’s son Ken, who he had yet to meet, were able to make their journey to Canada to reunite with Jin. Within that year, the Wong family expanded with the birth of Jin and Ling’s daughter, Joyce.
Jin started his life in Calgary as a waiter at Linda Mae restaurant in Chinatown. He went on to spend most of his working life as a business owner, primarily as a restaurant owner but also as a convenience store owner. He was a hard worker, an excellent provider, and a man who was generous beyond words.
Though he spent a large portion of his time working, Jin made time for the things he loved. He enjoyed spending time with his family, the horse races, and watching sports events and the news. He considered reading his newspapers his downtime and found joy in relaxing with the current world events.
Jin was an active family man, always looking for ways to spend time with his loved ones. He and Ling spent countless days babysitting their grandchildren in his retirement, and always wanted to share his love of food with the people he cared for. There were endless meals and treats – where Jin was, food was.
Jin passed away peacefully in Calgary, AB on September 2, 2021. He spent his final days in the care of Rocky Ridge Retirement Community, where he received loving care from the staff. He is survived by his wife Ling; son Ken (Heidi); daughter Joyce (Rob); granddaughters Ashley (Paul), Amanda (David), and Rebecca (Cody). He also is remembered by six great grandchildren and his older brother Jin Woo. He was predeceased by his older sister Lai Kuen.
