Mrs. Jie H. Tan passed away peacefully at the Wing Kei Nursing Home in Calgary, AB on Friday, July 26, 2013 at the age of 92 years.
Born on December 13, 1920, Jie grew up in Guangdong province of China dedicating herself to teaching prior to immigrating to Indonesia with her husband. In 1977, they followed their children to Canada. A testament to her love of teaching, Jie was known as Lao Shi (Teacher) at the Wing Kei Care Centre. She is survived by her loving husband, Weng T. Tan; her children William Y. Chan (Zhu Ling), Shirley Wong and Jeannie Setiawan (Budi); her grandchildren Peter Chan (Yolanda), Gilbert Wong, Melissa Setiawan (Schuyler), Stephanie Setiawan (Andrew) and Jennifer Jackson (Derek); great grandchildren Michael, Sarina, Suriyani, Nicholas, and Donnelly. Jie is predeceased by her daughter-in-law Susan Chan and her son-in-law John Wong.
Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at visitation held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A Celebration of Jie’s Life will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
