Jean Margaret Flack West

December 4, 1929 Medicine Hat – May 29, 2013 Calgary

The family of Jean West would like to share the news of her passing. She passed on May 29, 2013 at the age of 83 at the Mackenzie Town Long Term Care Center with her son at her side and her daughter there in spirit by phone.

Jean was born in Medicine Hat and moved with her parents and brother to the Bridgeland area in Calgary when she was a young girl. She graduated from Western Canada High School, and had a long working career which included positions at Alberta Furniture, Trimac Transportation and Underwriter’s Adjustment Bureau. Jean had a passion for news and politics and was proud to have been a campaign volunteer for the Conservative Party. She loved to bake and garden. She was an accomplished knitter who enjoyed making sweaters for family and scarves and mittens for the homeless. Jean will be lovingly remembered by her children Coleen (Robert Olivier) West and Bob (Gail) West; three grandchildren Jonathan, Jacqueline (Shawn) Fraser and Jennifer; two great grandchildren Lucas and Leah; her sister-in-law Kathy Flack; two nephews and a niece; her cousin Deanna Coleman; and her dear friend of over 50 years, Shirley DeDeugd. Jean was predeceased by her parents Ernest and Dorothy (nee Green) Flack; her stepmother Ida (nee Flemmer) Flack; her only brother Peter; her ex-husband Robert (Bob) West; and her dear friend from childhood, Anna Marie Staples Main.

Our mother’s friends are welcome to join her family in a Celebration of Jean’s Life at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Thursday, June 6, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. Following Jean’s wishes, cremation has taken place and she will be interred with her mother in Queen’s Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, 201, 222 – 58 Avenue S.W., Calgary, AB T2H 2S3.
