With great sorrow and sadness, we announce the passing of Helena Swiatek; our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, at the age of 94. She passed peacefully on Thursday, March 1, 2018.
Helena was taken from her birth place in Poland on the first transport to the concentration camps in Siberia during the second world war. She made her way to England and served the British Royal Airforce W.A.A.F.
In 1947, she immigrated and settled in Calgary to start a new life. She was an honored member of the Polish Combatants Association of Calgary and member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Polish Church.
Helena was awarded a medal by the Polish government for her contribution to the Polish underground movement, saving many lives who later returned to the war effort.
Helena was known for her kindness and generosity. She always had a wonderful sense of humor and crocheted many a hat and poncho to gift to her family and friends.
Helena is survived and sadly missed by her eight children, their spouses, her fifteen grandchildren, her six great-grandchildren, and her family across the sea and many friends who love her dearly all over the world.
Visitation and prayers will be held on Tuesday, March 6, 2018 at Fosters Garden Chapel Services from 7pm to 9pm pm 3220 - 4 ST N.W.
Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, March 7, 2018 11:00 AM at Our Lady Queen of Peace Polish Church with Interment at Queens Park Cemetery to Follow.
In lieu of Flowers Donations may be made to any charity of your choice.
